Aims
Our objective is to organise a conference where the following questions will be addressed:
* Where are the opportunities and challenges for cooperation between Archaeology and Tourism?
* Do we want better connections between Archaeology and Tourism? If so, how do we achieve this?
* What can archaeological sites and historic monuments offer tourism in Switzerland?
In our view archaeologists and tourism experts should improve communications, because both sides would benefit from a long‐term collaboration. The organisation of this conference represent a first step.
Public
This symposium is organised for Swiss experts of Archaeology and Tourism. People working in both fields, at an academic level, in local government or in the commercial sector will be invited to discuss opportunities and challenges for bringing these domains closer together and to see were new connections can be made.
Tourism experts and archaeologists from outside of Switzerland also be most welcome to attend the conference.
Results
Besides a better knowledge and synergy between the domains of Archaeology and Tourism, it is intended that the symposium will generate the results listed below:
* A clear idea of what archaeology can offer the Swiss National Tourism Office and other tourism partners.
One of the conference workshops is aimed at developing a series of archaeological offers for interested tourism partners, such as visits to sites and museums in Switzerland and ideas for cultural heritage excursions.
* A publication of the conference proceedings.
This will include both the presentations and the workshop discussions, and will appear in the first half of 2013.
* Continued meetings after the conference
This conference will not be a one‐time event. We intent to organise follow‐up meetings on themes generated by the conference presentations and workshops..
* A «Best Practice Guide for Archaeology & Tourism in Switzerland».
